What is the Baby Boom?

After WWII ended the birth rate in the U.S. (and a few other countries, but this site primarily deals with a U.S. phenomena and perspective) began to climb.  The war was over and the outlook of the nation was positive.  The Depression had ended, two major threats to our American way of life had been defeated, and a positive, upbeat future was in the offing.  Families formed and births increased.  This increased rate of birth peaked 11 years into the cycle in 1957 where the top of the bell curve reached it's highest point although the birthrate did not drop back to pre-1946 levels until after 1964 when the U.S. government pronounced that the baby boom was over.

Why split the generation into groups?

The split is a natural one between two cohorts that were influenced by very different environments as they matured.  Children of the 1950s and children of the 1960s experienced dramatic differences in almost all aspects of their lives and in the world around them.

Why do you use the term "Late Boomer?"
